Covestro presents a portfolio of sustainable solutions for the footwear sector at FIMEC 2022

Between March 8th and 10th, Covestro will be present at the 45th edition of FIMEC (International Fair of Leather, Chemical Products, Components, Machinery and Equipment for Footwear and Tanneries) with a wide portfolio to meet the demands of the footwear market for more sustainable products. Among the technologies presented by the company during the event will be thermoplastic polyurethanes and polyurethanes developed from CO2, laminates and water-based adhesives, as well as recycled composites and polycarbonates.
“Covestro is fully committed to accelerating the transition towards circular economy, expanding this model to its business partners, suppliers and customers”, highlights Silvio Torres, LATAM’s Head of Covestro's Coatings and Adhesives Area. “FIMEC is an important opportunity for us to present to the footwear market how to be part of this change”.
Check out some of the technologies that will be presented at the event below:
Raw materials for adhesives
Brand name: Dispercoll U®
Applied on soles, midsoles, uppers and finishes, water-based adhesives are an alternative to solvent-based adhesives, which reduces flammability risks and environmental impacts, improves the work environment and avoids risks to workers' health. Due to its higher solids content, it allows a smaller amount to be applied and provides a reduction in freight costs and inventory costs as a result.
2D Printing
Brand name: Desmomelt®
Aliphatic polyurethane used for digital printing that allows automation and precise application of adhesives and providing greater freedom of design.
TPU
Brand name: Desmopan®
Used in soles, midsoles, uppers and details, the Desmopan® line comprises polyurethane thermoplastics (TPU) made from raw materials from renewable sources such as biomass and CO2.
CO2 based Polyurethane Foam
Brand name: cardyon®
cardyon® is a Covestro technology produced with up to 20% carbon dioxide, partially replacing the base of raw materials derived from petroleum for the production of polyols. It can be used in uppers, linings, insoles and finishes.
Water based PU laminate
Brand name: INSQIN®
INSQIN® water-based PU offers a much more sustainable way to produce coated textiles than conventional technologies. Safer, with a lower carbon footprint, energy and water consumption, it can be applied to uppers, linings, insoles and finishes.
elastomers for heel caps
Brand name: Baytec T4X®
For the production of heel caps, Covestro offers Polyurethane Elastomers free of restricted substances. This technology combines lower cost, great performance and offers more safety to workers' health.
Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites
Brand name: Maezio™
Stabilizers, toe caps, insoles and structural parts can be created using the material, which allows to obtain the aesthetics and resistance of metals with the flexibility, lightness and design freedom for plastics.
Recyclable Polycarbonate
Brand name: Makrolon R®
Heels, soles & platforms, insoles and the assembly process can be optimized with a sustainable alternative, making it possible to add value to the product from post-consumer materials.
